Description

Richland County, South Carolina, through its Conservation Commission, offers the Natural Resource Grant program to support neighborhood groups, organizations, and agencies in initiatives that protect natural resources, improve water quality, and promote active living through trail development. The program also encourages innovative approaches, such as low-impact development and green infrastructure, and supports educational programs aimed at conservation and environmental awareness within Richland County.

Grants are available for up to $20,000, and recipients must provide a 20% match through in-kind contributions or cash. Projects must demonstrate a clear public benefit to qualify for funding. Applications are due annually in early February, and approved projects receive funds beginning in July. Applications must be submitted through Zoom Grants, and resources such as training handouts, a slideshow, and a video are available to guide applicants. Technical support is also accessible via email or phone.

Eligible projects include those that address natural resource protection, enhance water quality, promote sustainability, and foster public awareness of conservation. Organizations with innovative and impactful proposals are strongly encouraged to apply, particularly those with educational or community engagement components.

To apply, applicants must complete the online application through the Zoom Grants platform, following the FY25-26 Natural Resource Grants Criteria and Guidelines. Applicants are advised to use the available resources to ensure compliance with requirements and maximize their chances of success. Grantee forms will be required for documentation and reporting throughout the funding period for successful applicants.

Evaluation criteria prioritize clear public benefits, innovative solutions, and alignment with the program’s conservation goals. The Commission looks for projects with measurable outcomes that reflect a commitment to protecting and enhancing Richland County’s natural environment. Matching contributions are considered as part of the application’s overall strength.

The application deadline is early February each year, with funding decisions made shortly after. Approved projects will receive funding starting in July. For additional assistance, applicants can access training materials or contact technical support or the Richland County Ombudsman’s Office for general inquiries.
