Charge Up Michigan Program
This program provides funding to public and private organizations in Michigan for the installation of DC fast charging stations to enhance electric vehicle infrastructure across the state.
Description
The Charge Up Michigan Program, administered by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), is an initiative aimed at expanding the state's electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. The program focuses on the deployment of DC fast charging stations across Michigan, ensuring that EV users can complete long-distance trips both within the state and to neighboring states and Canada. EGLE collaborates with electric utilities and eligible applicants to provide funding for various project costs, including the purchase of charging equipment, site preparation, installation, networking fees, and signage.
The program is open to both public and private organizations capable of hosting publicly accessible charging stations. Eligible applicants must be enrolled in a utility rebate program and align with program priorities. The program's site selection is based on studies conducted by Michigan State University, which have identified key locations where DC fast chargers are needed. These priority areas are displayed in the "Charge Up Michigan" layer of the Michigan Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Programs Map. Applications will also be considered for installations in high-density urban areas where additional chargers are required.
Funding is provided as a reimbursement and is capped at the lesser of 33.3% of total project costs or an amount that matches the contribution from the utility provider, up to a maximum of $70,000. Grantees must cover project costs upfront and will receive reimbursement upon submission and approval of invoices, receipts, and proof of payment.
Applicants must follow several preparatory steps before submitting an application. These steps include verifying site eligibility on the Michigan Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Programs Map, securing a site host agreement if necessary, obtaining a site assessment from a utility provider (including a letter of support), and gathering cost estimates from hardware, software, installation, and maintenance providers. A directory of potential EV infrastructure project partners is available to assist applicants in forming project teams.
Applications are reviewed and processed on a rolling, first-come, first-served basis until all available funding is allocated. Awardees are required to provide monthly progress updates, report charging session metrics, and submit detailed financial documentation. Payment requests must be submitted within 30 days of project completion.
Additional resources, including the Charge Up Michigan Request for Proposals and Application, are available to guide applicants through the process. The program supports broader state and national EV infrastructure initiatives, aligning with Michigan’s goals for sustainable transportation development.
