Rhode Island Foundation announces Catalyst Grant
This funding opportunity supports Rhode Island-based nonprofits in collaborative projects that promote diversity, equity, and sustainable change in response to community priorities.
Description
The Catalyst Grant program is a flagship funding initiative of the Rhode Island Foundation, created to support innovative, collaborative initiatives that drive lasting progress across the state. Following an extensive year-long assessment and public engagement process, the Foundation identified six key community priorities as part of its Five-Year Action Plan. These include issues repeatedly voiced by residents and stakeholders, forming the framework for funding under this grant. Central to all funded efforts is a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access (DEIA), with an emphasis on addressing systemic inequities.
The Catalyst Grant supports large, multi-year grants for collaborative projects that align with one or more of the Foundation’s six community priorities. Eligible projects must be led by a Rhode Island-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has demonstrated impact, operational capacity, and strong community ties. Collaborations may include additional nonprofits, academic institutions, and local or state government partners. Projects must showcase the ability to break through persistent barriers, build trust, and create scalable, sustainable change. Special consideration is given to initiatives that empower historically marginalized communities, especially those led by or serving these populations.
Grants are offered once a year and follow a two-stage application process. Interested applicants must begin by submitting a brief pre-application. For the 2025 cycle, the pre-application opens on March 10, 2025, and must be submitted by April 30, 2025. Applicants whose proposals show strong alignment with Foundation priorities will be invited to submit a full application. Notifications of advancement to the full application stage will be sent via email. Final grant decisions will be announced in early October 2025.
Each collaboration is eligible for only one Catalyst Grant per cycle. The maximum grant amount is $250,000 per year, and funding may be requested for up to three years. Proposed projects must include a clearly defined opportunity, strong collaboration infrastructure, realistic implementation and budget plans, and a path to sustainability. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate community engagement and to include mechanisms for evaluation, measurement, and shared learning.
Grant recipients will be required to report on project progress and submit a final outcomes report. Additionally, the Foundation may organize grantee meetings to facilitate shared learning and improve grantmaking processes. Technical and application support is available through Helen Morales, the Foundation’s Senior Associate for Grants & Community Investments.
