The Allergic Respiratory Diseases Research Award is a joint initiative between the American Lung Association and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI). Those outside of such divisions or institutions without such departments are not eligible. Up to 75% of the grant may be allocated toward the awardee’s salary and fringe benefits, and no more than 30% may be used for purchasing permanent equipment. Funding for the second year is contingent upon satisfactory progress and continued availability of funds.

Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens or hold valid visa status and be employed by a U.S. institution. Priority is given to applicants below the rank of associate professor and those who have not received more than one NIH R series award. Applications are reviewed by a panel that includes representatives from both sponsoring organizations, focusing on scientific merit, applicant qualifications, research environment, and long-term career potential in lung health research.

Applications must be submitted through ProposalCentral, with the portal opening on August 7, 2024, and closing on December 6, 2024, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time. Peer review will occur from January to April 2025, and notifications will be sent in June 2025. The research term begins on July 1, 2025.

Applicants are required to provide several documents, including a detailed research plan, budget, three letters of recommendation, and a department head statement. Ethical compliance regarding human subjects, animals, and biohazards must be confirmed. Projects must align with federal standards and cannot overlap budgetarily with other funded work.
