The Creative Shorts Fellowship, administered by Vision Maker Media, is a funding and mentorship program designed to support emerging Native filmmakers in the production of short films. Open to applicants twice annually, from January 1 to June 30 and from July 1 to December 31, this fellowship offers up to $25,000 for short film projects in documentary, drama, animation, or experimental genres. The fellowship is intended to empower Native voices and promote storytelling that challenges conventional perceptions and explores Native histories, values, and contemporary issues.

Applicants must be emerging Native filmmakers and are required to identify and secure a mentor—a professional film producer or director—prior to applying. The fellowship supports not only the production of the short film but also the professional development of the filmmaker through this mentorship. Mentors may be Native or non-Native, and they may also submit an application to mentor a specific filmmaker, provided both parties agree and have chosen each other prior to submission.

The fellowship emphasizes creative and innovative storytelling, with a goal of amplifying Native perspectives and narratives through artistic experimentation and culturally grounded content. Topic ideas can span a range of themes such as Native cultures, environmental or social justice, contemporary Native life, youth or elder perspectives, and empowerment.

Funding includes direct honorariums for mentors, as well as production support for the emerging filmmaker’s project. Applications must be submitted using the mandatory budget template and comply with the program’s eligibility and project requirements. The fellowship is generously supported by The Reva & David Logan Foundation and The Claire M. Hubbard Foundation.
