Responsible Design, Development, and Deployment of Technologies (ReDDDoT) Program
This funding opportunity supports collaborative projects that integrate ethical and societal considerations into the development of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and biotechnology, targeting researchers, industry professionals, and community organizations.
Description
The Responsible Design, Development, and Deployment of Technologies (ReDDDoT) program is a funding opportunity offered by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSF is a U.S. government agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. The ReDDDoT program is designed to encourage cross-disciplinary efforts to integrate ethical, legal, and societal considerations into the development of emerging technologies. This initiative focuses on areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and disaster mitigation, with the aim of benefiting society and minimizing harm.
The primary objectives of the ReDDDoT program are twofold. First, it aims to foster collaborations across various disciplines and sectors, including academia, industry, non-profit organizations, and government, to facilitate the translation of technology. Second, it seeks to ensure that ethical, legal, and societal considerations, as well as community values, are embedded in the design, development, and deployment of technology to promote public well-being. The program also aims to accelerate innovation in translational research, create broad communities of interest, educate and train the STEM workforce, and empower all Americans to participate in technology development.
For fiscal year 2025, the ReDDDoT program will consider proposals for three types of projects: Execute, Explore, and Inform (Workshop). Execute Projects are intended for established teams with relevant experience to carry out activities that have a significant and sustainable impact on technology development. Explore Projects focus on exploratory activities that identify and test approaches to responsible technology development. Inform (Workshop) Projects are designed for convenings and products that leverage expertise across research ecosystems. Proposals should focus on one or more of the following technology areas: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and disaster prevention or mitigation.
The total funding available for the ReDDDoT program is $12,000,000, subject to the availability of funds. It is estimated that the program will fund 25 to 31 projects. Specifically, up to 6-8 Execute Project proposals may receive between $750,000 and $1,500,000 each for three years, 14-16 Explore Project proposals may receive up to $300,000 each for no more than two years, and 5-7 Inform (Workshop) Project proposals may receive up to $75,000 each for no more than one year.
Eligibility for the ReDDDoT program requires that proposals be submitted in accordance with the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) effective for the relevant due date. Proposals must meet all specified requirements, and it is the responsibility of the proposer to ensure compliance. The deadline for full proposals is July 8, 2025, by 5 pm local time of the submitting organization. Proposals should be submitted through the NSF's designated channels.
