Community Grants Program 2025-2026
This program provides funding to New York-based community organizations and local government agencies for projects that promote sustainability and reduce environmental hazards through pollution prevention initiatives.
Description
The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I), hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology, administers an annual Community Grants Program to advance pollution prevention across New York State. The program funds local projects that promote sustainability, reduce environmental hazards, and foster healthier communities through public education, community engagement, and implementation of pollution prevention strategies. The 2025–2026 application cycle is now open, with submissions due by 5:00 p.m. EDT on April 18, 2025.
Pollution prevention (P2) refers to practices that reduce or eliminate waste at its source. Funded projects typically aim to change behaviors, modify processes, reduce reliance on hazardous chemicals, lower greenhouse gas emissions, conserve resources, and promote reuse and circular economy principles. Strong preference is given to proposals that demonstrate community partnerships, broad impact, replicability, and direct benefits to vulnerable or environmentally burdened populations.
Eligible applicants include New York-based community organizations and local government agencies. Community organizations may include nonprofits (not limited to 501(c)(3) status), academic institutions, health centers, unions, environmental justice groups, public benefit corporations, and neighborhood associations. Local government agencies such as schools, libraries, departments of public works, health boards, and zoning commissions may also apply. All applicants must operate primarily within New York State and must submit a W-9 form with their application.
Projects commonly funded under this program include those focused on reducing natural resource consumption, food waste, hazardous chemical usage, and promoting circular economy practices. Awards are intended to encourage practical, scalable models that other communities can adopt. The NYSP2I promotes dissemination of successful outcomes through case studies, webinars, and community events, fostering broader state-wide implementation.
Resources for applicants, including required forms and a downloadable Request for Applications (RFA), are available via the NYSP2I website. Additionally, a step-by-step video guide is available to help grantees complete quarterly invoicing and reporting.
