Unity Gardens, supported by Anne Arundel County

This funding opportunity supports community-led projects in Anne Arundel County that focus on planting native trees and shrubs to improve local ecosystems and address environmental issues like stormwater runoff and pollution.

Description

Unity Gardens is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering community partnerships through its grassroots grant program. With generous support from Anne Arundel County, Unity Gardens provides funding to volunteer-led gardening projects that promote environmental sustainability. These projects focus on stormwater management, pollution reduction, and habitat restoration using native plants. The program supports initiatives such as rain gardens, erosion control efforts, and pollinator gardens to improve local ecosystems.

For the Fall 2025 grant cycle, Unity Gardens will offer two funding levels. The standard grant awards up to $1,000 for native trees, shrubs, and plants, along with limited materials that support plant survival, such as mulch, soil amendments, and tree protection. Additionally, a "super grant" of up to $3,000 is available for projects in which at least 75% of the funding is dedicated to native trees and shrubs. Projects must be located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and be organized by community-based associations, HOAs, PTAs, faith-based groups, scouts, or other volunteer-led or nonprofit organizations.

Eligible projects must take place on public property, such as schools, libraries, parks, or land owned by a nonprofit or community association. A minimum of 80% of the grant funding must be spent on plant materials, and projects that dedicate 100% of the funds to native plants are preferred. Grant funds cannot be used for annuals, non-native species, hardscape, equipment, snacks, or delivery fees. Additionally, grantees must have a bank account in the name of their organization to receive funding.

All applications will be evaluated based on volunteer participation, community and environmental impact, project feasibility, budget clarity, long-term sustainability, and financial need. Priority is given to first-time applicants who meet all eligibility requirements. Returning applicants may be funded if resources allow, but organizations cannot receive more than one grant within a 12-month period.

The deadline for Fall 2025 grant applications is August 1, 2025, with applications opening earlier in the year. Grantees are required to submit a final report documenting project outcomes, expenses, and maintenance plans. Projects must be completed within the grant cycle unless an extension is granted. All funded projects must include signage acknowledging Unity Gardens, and grantees must obtain necessary permits before beginning their work.

Upon award notification, grantees will receive an agreement outlining grant conditions. The head of the organization must sign and return this agreement before funding is disbursed. Unity Gardens will issue checks after receiving signed agreements, and all grantees must adhere to reporting and maintenance requirements to ensure project sustainability.
