This funding opportunity provides $1 million to visionary nonprofit leaders dedicated to advancing educational equity for Black students and communities through innovative solutions and strategic investments.

Description

The 1954 Project Luminary Grant, managed by The CAFE Group, is a transformative funding opportunity designed to support bold and high-impact leaders working to advance education equity for Black students and communities. This initiative aims to disrupt systemic barriers and provide sustainable solutions through innovative leadership and strategic investment. The program seeks leaders with a proven track record of success in education who are ready to expand their influence and deepen their impact. Selected individuals, known as "Luminaries," become part of a powerful community of educators, changemakers, and visionaries dedicated to long-term systemic progress.

The grant provides each Luminary with a substantial unrestricted award of $1 million to support and grow their nonprofit organization. In addition to financial support, awardees gain national visibility through access to a network of philanthropists, funders, and thought leaders in education and related sectors. The program also offers a three-year cohort experience, including mentorship, leadership development, and strategic advisory services to ensure long-term success and sustainability.

This opportunity is open to visionary nonprofit leaders who are committed to addressing educational inequities that disproportionately affect Black students. Applicants should have a history of leadership in education and demonstrate a commitment to sustainable, impactful solutions. Organizations applying must align with one of the three impact areas: Innovation in Teaching and Learning, Diversity in Education, or Pathways to Economic Mobility. Successful applicants will be those who exhibit visionary leadership, strong organizational capacity, and a commitment to radical imagination in reshaping education.

The application process involves multiple stages, beginning with an Eligibility Form, which must be completed by February 23, 2025. Only applicants who meet the eligibility criteria and are invited to proceed will receive access to the full application, which opens from February 3 to February 28, 2025. Interested applicants are encouraged to register early and stay informed about key milestones in the application process.

Evaluation criteria emphasize three main areas: leadership, organizational strength, and visionary innovation. Applicants should be able to articulate a transformative vision for educational equity, demonstrate their ability to inspire and mobilize communities, and show adaptability in overcoming challenges. Organizations should be well-established and have a clear strategic plan for expansion and impact. The program seeks leaders who not only drive change within their own organizations but also contribute to the broader advancement of Black students and communities.

The 1954 Project is rooted in honoring the legacy of past leaders while redefining philanthropic support for Black educational leadership. By providing transformational capital and fostering a community of like-minded innovators, The CAFE Group aims to dismantle systemic barriers and create a more equitable future in education. Those interested in applying or nominating a potential Luminary are encouraged to begin the process by completing the Eligibility Form and engaging with The 1954 Project network.
