Description

The American Association of University Women offers General Operating Support Grants aimed at nonprofit organizations that focus on promoting education and equity for women and girls in grades K-12. These grants provide flexible funding that can be utilized by organizations to advance their missions, enhance sustainability, and foster innovation. Since the inception of these grants in 1972, AAUW has supported numerous communities across the United States through its Community Action Grants, which are designed to empower organizations dedicated to these causes.

The primary purpose of the General Operating Support Grants is to provide financial assistance to nonprofits that are committed to education and equity for women and girls. The grants are intended to support organizations that allocate more than 51 percent of their previous year's expenses and programming to this mission. Preference is given to organizations that promote gender equity in STEM fields and those serving geographically or demographically underserved communities.

Funding for these grants ranges from $8,000 to $20,000, with an average award amount of $10,000. The grant period is set for one year, specifically from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026. Organizations can use the funds as they see fit, which allows for a broad range of applications that can support various aspects of their operations.

To be eligible for these grants, applicants must be incorporated as a nonprofit with a federally designated tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service code. This includes AAUW branches and state organizations with 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) tax-exempt status. Organizations must demonstrate a commitment to education and equity for women and girls in grades K-12, and those with a focus on gender equity in STEM fields are preferred. Additionally, organizations serving underserved communities are also prioritized.

Certain individuals and organizations are ineligible to apply for these grants. This includes members of the AAUW Board of Directors, employees of AAUW, review panelists, and their immediate families. Previous recipients of AAUW Community Action Grants must wait three years before reapplying.

The application process requires organizations to submit specific documentation and answer questions related to their mission and impact. Evaluation criteria will focus on the organization’s commitment to education and equity, the effectiveness of their programs, and their ability to utilize the grant funds effectively.

The deadline for submitting applications is November 15, 2024. Interested organizations are encouraged to visit the AAUW website for more information and to ensure they meet all submission requirements. For any inquiries, applicants can contact AAUW via email or phone.
