Description

The Charlevoix County Community Foundation (C3F) aims to enhance the quality of life for Charlevoix County residents through philanthropic support. The foundation provides grants to organizations, schools, and municipalities to drive positive change. The Arts & Culture Cycle is one such funding opportunity, designed to support projects and programs that promote arts, music, history, and culture within Charlevoix County. The cycle is open to nonprofit organizations, government units, and educational institutions that serve the community. Additionally, donor advisors associated with C3F may contribute funds to support applicants through this cycle.

Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, all levels of educational institutions, and government units that serve Charlevoix County residents. Applicants must be in good standing with the IRS and up to date with follow-up reports for previous C3F grants. To ensure accessibility and inclusivity, organizations that discriminate in hiring or service provision are not eligible. Faith-based organizations may apply if their proposals demonstrate a public benefit, do not proselytize, and ensure access to all individuals regardless of religious beliefs or lifestyle choices.

Applications for the Arts & Culture Cycle open in early January each year and are due by March 1 at 11:59 PM (Eastern). The review process prioritizes proposals that demonstrate collaboration, address new or existing needs, encourage self-sufficiency, focus on problem prevention, and avoid service duplication. Additional evaluation criteria include an organization’s impact in the community, leadership and financial solvency, and the long-term sustainability of the proposed project or program. While there is no minimum or maximum grant amount, applicants are encouraged to request funding based on their specific project needs. A cash contribution from the applicant is required, though the amount varies depending on the project scope.

The grant review process is managed by the Arts & Culture Advisory Committee, which evaluates applications and makes funding recommendations to the Board of Trustees. Donor advisors may also choose to contribute to proposals through their Donor Advised Funds. Final funding decisions are announced in early April, and awarded grants are distributed within two weeks of approval. The governing board of each recipient organization is responsible for ensuring appropriate fund usage and project implementation.

Grantees are required to complete a follow-up summary within one year of receiving funds or upon project completion, whichever comes first. Follow-up requirements include a conversation with C3F staff or a written report submitted through the online grant system. Grant recipients are encouraged to provide photos and accommodate site visits, where possible, to showcase the impact of their projects. If a project is delayed or cannot be completed within the specified timeframe, the recipient must notify C3F.

Applicants begin the process by contacting Ashley Cousens to confirm eligibility and receive an access code for the online grant application. The application can be completed collaboratively online and submitted before the deadline. Organizations that receive funding will be notified by phone and via email, after which grant checks are mailed out. C3F staff remain available throughout the process to provide guidance and answer questions.
