2026-2028 Alaska Sea Grant Program
This funding opportunity supports research and projects that enhance Alaska's marine and coastal ecosystems, focusing on collaboration among local universities, nonprofits, and Tribal entities to address community needs and promote sustainable practices.
Description
The Alaska Sea Grant invites proposals for its 2026–2028 funding cycle to support research, education, and extension projects that address challenges and opportunities in Alaska’s marine and coastal ecosystems. This funding program, part of the National Sea Grant College Program, prioritizes projects in four focus areas: healthy coastal ecosystems, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, resilient communities and economies, and environmental literacy and workforce development. Projects should integrate scientific research, traditional knowledge, or local expertise to address relevant community needs.
Eligible applicants include researchers affiliated with Alaska-based universities, colleges, research institutions, nonprofits, Tribal entities, and museums. Partnerships with federal and state agencies, local governments, and industry are encouraged. Proposals must align with the Alaska Sea Grant’s 2024–2027 Strategic Plan and include detailed engagement plans addressing diversity, equity, inclusion, and the program’s four R’s (Relationship, Responsibility, Reciprocity, Redistribution). Student involvement is a key component, and two years of graduate student support are available outside the project budget.
Preliminary proposals are due February 5, 2025, with selected applicants invited to submit full proposals by May 15, 2025. The grant cycle begins February 1, 2026, and awards average $50,000 annually for two years, excluding student support. A 50% non-federal cost-share is required. Proposals undergo a rigorous peer-review process, and final decisions are based on technical merit, societal relevance, and alignment with program goals.
