This funding opportunity provides financial support for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in New York State to make significant improvements to their facilities and equipment, promoting accessibility, sustainability, and community engagement.
Description
The Small and Midsized Capital Improvement Grants for Arts and Culture program by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) offers funding for arts and cultural organizations to undertake significant capital improvements. These grants aim to enhance facilities and equipment, fostering accessibility, sustainability, and community engagement across New York State. Applications are due by January 14, 2025, at 4 PM, and projects must align with program priorities such as improving health and safety, supporting environmental sustainability, or expanding cultural offerings.
Organizations may apply for grants ranging from $10,000 to $2,000,000, depending on the project’s scope and organizational budget. No-match grants are available for organizations with budgets under $2 million, allowing funding for 100% of project costs up to $99,000. Matching grants, requiring a 1:1 match, are available for larger projects. Eligible expenses include construction, renovation, and the purchase of complete capital equipment systems with a minimum useful life of 10 years. Routine maintenance, repairs, and administrative expenses are ineligible.
Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts and cultural organizations incorporated or registered in New York State, with site control of the property involved in the project. Projects must be well-developed, ready to commence within 12 months of funding, and supported by necessary documentation, such as architectural plans and contractor estimates. Applications must demonstrate how the project aligns with NYSCA’s goals of fostering diversity, accessibility, and environmental stewardship.
Applications require detailed project narratives, financial documentation, and supporting materials such as contractor estimates and site control documents. Priority is given to underserved areas, first-time grantees, and small or midsized organizations. Applicants must also prequalify in the New York Statewide Financial System (SFS) by the submission deadline.
Award notifications will be made in April 2025, with funding available from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028. Reporting requirements include interim and final progress reports, documenting compliance and project milestones. For grants exceeding $100,000, organizations must meet Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) participation goals.
