Ceiling: $375,000
Private
New Jersey Department of Education

This grant provides funding to New Jersey County Vocational School Districts to develop a comprehensive career and technical education curriculum in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, in partnership with higher education institutions and industry experts.

Description

The Expanding Career Pathways in Artificial Intelligence (AI) grant program aims to support the development of a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence and Robotics career and technical education (CTE) curriculum. This initiative will create a rigorous three-course CTE program specifically for the Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) 11.0102, which covers AI and Robotics. The program seeks to establish a high-quality curriculum that integrates generative AI literacy and follows guiding principles for teaching AI, thus ensuring that students gain relevant skills and knowledge in this rapidly evolving field. Moreover, the program intends to foster collaboration and continuous improvement in AI education by forming Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) that include school districts, higher education institutions, and industry experts.

The grant opportunity is open to New Jersey County Vocational School Districts (CVSDs) that partner with a four-year institution of higher education (IHE) and an AI industry specialist. To be eligible, the applying CVSDs must currently offer at least one approved CTE program in one of the following areas: Computer Science, Computer Programming/Programmer (General), or Mechatronics, Robotics, and Automation Engineering. By involving these specialized programs, the grant aims to ensure that the developed AI curriculum aligns with existing technological education pathways, providing students with relevant, future-ready competencies.

A total funding amount of $750,000 is allocated for this grant, with up to two awards of $375,000 each available. This competitive grant is structured as a single-year program, running from February 1, 2025, to January 31, 2026, contingent on the availability of FY25 state appropriations. The grant will support activities related to curriculum development, professional collaboration, and educational enhancements in AI and Robotics CTE programs.

Applicants should prepare proposals that demonstrate how their planned curriculum will expand access to AI education, incorporate generative AI literacy, and utilize guiding principles for effective teaching and learning in AI. Furthermore, applications should detail plans for establishing and maintaining PLCs to support professional development and curriculum refinement, ensuring that AI education remains dynamic and closely connected to industry advancements.

The deadline for submitting applications is November 14, 2024. Proposals must comply with the guidelines set forth by the Office of Grants Management and demonstrate a clear partnership with an IHE and AI industry experts. Evaluation criteria will likely focus on the quality of the proposed curriculum, the effectiveness of the planned professional collaboration, and the potential impact on student learning outcomes in AI and Robotics.

This grant program represents a significant opportunity for vocational schools in New Jersey to lead in AI education by equipping students with advanced skills and knowledge, fostering industry-aligned education pathways, and ensuring that teaching practices evolve alongside technological advancements.
