2024 New Courses Grants
This funding program provides financial support to organizations working to improve digital access and skills in underserved communities through the acquisition of devices, client-facing IT support, and the development of digital literacy courses.
Description
The 2024 grant program provides funding of up to $250,000 across three separate funding cycles, with each cycle addressing different aspects of digital access and technology support. The grant categories include Devices, I.T. Support, and New Courses, each with specific goals and funding limits designed to enhance digital literacy, access, and support within communities. The program aims to distribute funds to organizations engaged in improving digital connectivity and skills through targeted technology initiatives.
The Devices Grant supports the acquisition of internet-access devices such as desktop and laptop computers, tablets, and smartphones. This grant is specifically intended for devices that enable internet access, while equipment used to expand or support network infrastructure, such as hotspots or servers, is not eligible. Funding for this cycle opened on June 3, 2024, and closed on July 12, 2024, with a total funding allocation of up to $75,000. An estimated 5 to 20 awards ranging from $1,000 to $20,000 were anticipated, and grantees from this cycle include a variety of community organizations such as the Black Family Technology Awareness Association and the Hispanic Economic Development Corporation.
The I.T. Support Grant cycle is aimed at organizations that provide digital access programming and need client-facing I.T. support services to enhance hands-on technical assistance, including troubleshooting common network and device issues. The funds from this grant are strictly for client support and cannot be used for internal staff or organizational I.T. needs. The application period for I.T. Support Grants ran from August 1, 2024, to September 12, 2024, with an available funding pool of up to $125,000. Awards range between $20,000 and $60,000, with an estimated three to five grants being distributed. Recipients will be announced by October 31, 2024.
The New Courses Grant is focused on fostering digital up-skilling programs that address literacy and educational needs, aiming to go beyond basic digital skills but stopping short of advanced training like coding or computer science. This funding cycle encourages the development of courses that can help bridge the digital skills gap in communities. The application period for New Courses Grants is from October 1, 2024, to November 15, 2024, with a total funding opportunity of up to $50,000. Estimated awards range from $1,000 to $10,000, with three to five grants expected to be issued.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to participate in virtual office hours scheduled for October and November to seek clarification and guidance on their applications. These sessions provide an opportunity to address specific questions related to the grant requirements, eligibility criteria, and application processes. The grant program emphasizes the importance of reaching underserved communities and supporting initiatives that significantly enhance digital access and technological empowerment.
