Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, and museums, with certain grants open to independent scholars. Applications must demonstrate a clear humanities focus, the involvement of qualified humanities scholars, a well-defined budget with required matching funds, and a public access component. For major grants and similar categories, a cash match of 25% of the request is required. Proposals should detail project objectives, audience reach, and methods for evaluating impact.

Applications are subject to a multi-step review process. Minigrants are reviewed by the Program Committee, while larger grants undergo further evaluation by the Board of Directors. Decisions are communicated within two to twelve weeks, depending on the grant type. Projects must allow at least six to twelve weeks between the deadline and the start date.

Grant deadlines vary by category, with Major Grants due February 1 and September 1, Minigrants accepted quarterly, and specific deadlines for other grants in February and September. Travel Assistance Grants require applications at least 60 days before travel. While previous funding does not guarantee future awards, projects demonstrating strong community impact and collaboration are prioritized.
