Arizona Route 66 Grant
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies in Arizona for projects that preserve and promote the historic Route 66 corridor, enhancing its cultural heritage and visitor experience.
Description
The Arizona Route 66 Fund Grant is administered by the Arizona Community Foundation (ACF) in cooperation with the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona. The fund seeks to support projects that preserve, promote, and protect the historic Route 66 corridor within Arizona. This grant opportunity invites applications from nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies at the local, state, and tribal levels that are located within Arizona. The ultimate goal is to ensure that the historic significance and cultural heritage of Route 66 is both preserved and made accessible for future generations.
The funding scope includes preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation of historic transportation-related properties along Route 66. Eligible properties must be located directly on or within view of the historic route and retain historical and architectural integrity. Examples include gas stations, motels, tourist shops, original road pavement, and associated infrastructure like bridges and culverts. Funding also supports planning, educational outreach, and research projects that enhance understanding, preservation, or community appreciation of Route 66. In addition, projects that foster public-private partnerships, leverage matching funds, and benefit local Route 66 communities are particularly encouraged.
Grants will range from a minimum of $1,000 to a maximum of $50,000, with the total funding pool subject to availability at the time of award. Funding may be used to cover direct project costs including staffing, marketing, consultants, supplies, equipment, and even administrative expenses that are directly tied to the project’s execution. Applications must demonstrate fiscal accountability, compliance with non-discrimination policies, and alignment with ACF’s guidelines. Only one application is allowed per eligible organization unless applying on behalf of a collaborative effort.
The application period opens at 9:00 a.m. on February 1, 2025, and closes at 4:00 p.m. on March 14, 2025. Applications must be submitted online, and all applicants must first update their organizational profile in the ACF grant portal. Final funding decisions will be made by a grant review panel comprised of volunteer community leaders, with award notifications issued in May 2025. A final project report will be due in May 2026 for all funded projects.
Applications will be reviewed and scored based on criteria including community impact, alignment with Route 66 preservation goals, clear project plans and timelines, budget clarity, measurable outcomes, partnerships, and long-term sustainability. Applicants are expected to include quotes for repair work if applicable, provide detailed project plans, and demonstrate how the project will enhance the visitor experience along Route 66. Special emphasis is placed on retaining historic integrity and ensuring projects align with professional preservation standards.
