This initiative provides financial incentives for U.S.-based manufacturers of solar panels and inverters to achieve eco-friendly certification, promoting the development of sustainable solar products.

Description

The Promoting Registration of Inverters and Modules with Ecolabel (PRIME) Prize is a $2.7 million initiative to encourage U.S.-based manufacturers of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules and inverters to achieve certification through the EPEAT ecolabel. Operated by the Global Electronics Council (GEC), EPEAT is a key sustainability standard recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The PRIME Prize supports the expansion of EPEAT-registered solar products to meet increasing demand from environmentally conscious buyers, including federal agencies aiming to align with sustainability goals.

The PRIME Prize targets the solar market’s need for more eco-friendly options, particularly as the U.S. government integrates more solar energy systems into construction projects and power purchase agreements. As of August 2024, only four solar PV products are EPEAT-registered, underscoring the opportunity for manufacturers to fill a critical gap. By increasing the availability of certified products, the competition helps federal agencies meet procurement requirements, supports sustainable energy initiatives, and enhances market appeal for participating manufacturers.

The prize structure is divided into two phases. In Phase 1, manufacturers submit a letter of intent to register up to four PV module or inverter products with EPEAT and provide proof of GEC participation. Winners in this phase receive $50,000 in cash and progress to the next stage. In Phase 2, participants must validate their products' compliance with EPEAT criteria and provide proof of registration. Manufacturers earn $100,000 for each registered product, with a maximum total of $400,000 for four products. This two-phase approach incentivizes both initial commitment and successful certification.

Eligibility for the PRIME Prize is limited to U.S.-based manufacturers of PV modules or inverters who currently have no EPEAT-registered products. This ensures the program targets new entrants into the EPEAT-certified market, fostering growth in the eco-friendly solar product sector.

EPEAT certification provides significant benefits, including meeting sustainability regulations, appealing to environmentally conscious consumers, and increasing sales opportunities. Certified products enable federal agencies to meet procurement guidelines and help manufacturers position themselves as leaders in sustainable technology development.

Interested manufacturers are encouraged to follow the competition for updates and details about the official rules. Questions can be directed to PRIMEPrize@nrel.gov. The PRIME Prize offers a unique opportunity for manufacturers to align with federal sustainability priorities, expand their market presence, and compete for significant financial rewards while supporting the growth of eco-conscious solar energy solutions.
