Community Health Aide Program: Tribal Planning Implementation
This funding opportunity provides financial support to Tribes and Tribal Organizations in the contiguous United States to establish or expand Community Health Aide Programs that improve healthcare access and outcomes in underserved communities.
Description
The *Community Health Aide Program: Tribal Planning & Implementation* grant (HHS-2025-IHS-TPI-0001) is offered by the Indian Health Service (IHS) to assist Tribes and Tribal Organizations in planning and implementing a Community Health Aide Program (CHAP) in the contiguous United States. This opportunity, still in its forecast phase, will provide eligible applicants with resources to initiate or expand CHAP services tailored to the specific health needs of their communities. The CHAP initiative is intended to enable regional flexibility and adapt to local needs, making it a viable solution to improve healthcare access and outcomes within Tribal communities.
This program offers funding totaling $3,000,000, with individual awards expected to range from $500,000 to $750,000. A maximum of four awards are anticipated, and these will be offered on a discretionary basis to eligible applicants, including Federally recognized Indian Tribes and Tribal organizations as defined by U.S. Code 25 U.S.C. 1603(14) and 25 U.S.C. 1603(26). Applicants must submit letters of support or Tribal Resolutions from the Tribes they intend to serve, demonstrating community support for their proposed CHAP operations. Notably, applicants cannot hold concurrent CHAP awards, meaning that active awardees are not eligible for additional funding within the same program cycle. In addition, Tribes restricted under the Alaska Moratorium are ineligible.
The primary purpose of this grant program is to support the establishment of Community Health Aide Programs that provide access to trained healthcare aides within underserved communities, particularly in rural or isolated locations. CHAP aides play a critical role in delivering primary, dental, and behavioral healthcare, thus addressing health disparities and enhancing local health infrastructure. By fostering CHAP implementation, this program will contribute to health service equity and support self-determined healthcare initiatives within Tribal communities.
The application package, including specific deadlines and submission guidelines, is expected to be posted in May 2025. Prospective applicants are encouraged to monitor Grants.gov for updates on the final application release and submission requirements.
