This funding opportunity supports independent researchers at U.S. nonprofit or academic institutions in advancing promising cancer research from preclinical stages to human testing.

Description

The American Cancer Society’s Mission Boost Grants (MBG) are intended to support clinical-enabling cancer research that moves promising preclinical findings toward human testing. These grants are specifically designed for independent investigators at any career stage working at eligible nonprofit or academic institutions within the United States. The MBG program provides "boost" funding to projects that are transitioning into clinical phases of research.

MBGs are structured in two stages. Stage I supports projects with clearly defined milestones aimed at de-risking the transition to clinical studies. It funds research up to two years in duration, with a budget of $135,000 per year in direct costs plus 10 percent indirect costs, allowing for a maximum total of $297,000. Stage II provides funding for testing in cancer patients. It is available only to investigators who have successfully completed Stage I after holding it for at least 18 months. Stage II grants cover up to 18 months of research and support budgets of up to $545,000 in direct costs plus 10 percent indirect costs.

As of 2025, eligibility for both Stage I and Stage II MBGs includes independent investigators with full-time faculty appointments (or equivalent) at U.S.-based academic institutions or eligible nonprofits. Prior ACS funding is no longer required for Stage I applicants, increasing accessibility to a wider pool of researchers. For Stage II, applicants must have completed their Stage I milestones to be considered.

Applications are due biannually, on June 1 and December 1. If these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the deadline is extended to the following business day. Applications must be submitted electronically via ProposalCentral. Applicants are expected to propose outcome-specific milestones for Stage I and present clear evidence of readiness for human studies in Stage II.

The grant aims to drive innovation in clinical cancer research by funding projects that show strong potential for translation to patient care. Questions or technical support related to the application process can be directed to the American Cancer Society at grants@cancer.org or by phone at 800-227-2345.
