AHRQ Mentored Career Enhancement Awards for Established Investigators in Patient-Centered Outcome Research (K18)
This grant provides funding for mid-career and senior researchers to enhance their skills in patient-centered outcome research, focusing on improving healthcare quality and addressing disparities in underserved populations.
Description
The AHRQ Mentored Career Enhancement Awards for Established Investigators in Patient-Centered Outcome Research (K18) offers an opportunity for mid-career and senior investigators to expand their expertise in comparative effectiveness research methodologies within the framework of patient-centered outcome research (PCOR). The program aims to foster skill development and career growth, providing support for individuals seeking to broaden their research capabilities or redirect their focus to new areas of health services research.
The initiative supports a mentored career development experience, enabling investigators to dedicate a minimum of 50% of their professional effort to acquiring new research competencies. The grant encourages projects addressing disparities in healthcare outcomes and evaluating healthcare delivery system designs. Examples include research in maternal healthcare, primary care delivery, mental healthcare, digital healthcare tools, and social determinants of health integration. Candidates may also pursue studies to develop and test innovative methodologies in PCOR. Successful projects should demonstrate a clear focus on addressing health inequities and improving the overall quality of care in the United States.
Eligible applicants include public or nonprofit higher education institutions, community-based organizations, tribal governments, and historically underserved institutions such as HBCUs and TCCUs. Candidates must hold doctoral degrees, have established research careers, and be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Institutions must provide resources and support for the candidate's research and career development. Mentors should have expertise in the proposed research area and a history of successful guidance for early-career researchers.
Award budgets are capped at $275,000 annually, covering salary, research costs, and related expenses. The total project period ranges from six to 24 months. The award may support indirect costs up to 8% of modified total direct costs. Applicants must propose a sound research plan aligned with AHRQ priorities, detail institutional commitment, and ensure compliance with federal policies regarding data management, diversity inclusion, and responsible conduct of research.
Applications are submitted through Grants.gov and evaluated via AHRQ’s peer-review process. Criteria include the candidate's research track record, the significance of the proposed project, the appropriateness of the career development plan, and institutional support. Proposals must address the inclusion of priority populations, particularly underserved groups, in their research designs.
Applications are accepted on standard due dates, with the earliest submission date being December 10, 2021, and the current expiration date extended to July 13, 2026. Applicants are encouraged to consult AHRQ staff before submission. Full details on application instructions, evaluation criteria, and administrative requirements are available on the AHRQ website.
