Wake County Solid Waste Division

This grant provides funding to schools, nonprofits, and businesses in Wake County, North Carolina, to implement innovative projects that reduce waste through recycling, composting, and other diversion strategies.

Description

The Wake County Solid Waste Management Division offers Waste Reduction Grants aimed at reducing the volume of waste sent to the South Wake Landfill through various diversion strategies. These grants have been available since 2004 and have supported schools, nonprofits, and businesses in implementing recycling, composting, and waste reduction initiatives. Past projects have included the development of onsite composting systems, workplace recycling programs, and the creation of technology-enhanced waste sorting tools.

The purpose of the grant is to fund innovative waste reduction projects that include measurable impacts. Eligible projects must employ strategies such as waste prevention, reuse, repair, recycling, or composting. Educational and communication components are encouraged but should not be the sole focus of the project. All projects must be completed within 12 months, although extensions for up to another 12 months may be granted on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants must be for-profit, not-for-profit, or educational institutions operating in or based in Wake County, North Carolina. Funded projects must comply with all relevant laws and regulations, including zoning, labor, and transportation requirements. The grant encourages collaboration with Wake County for shared outreach, such as media releases and social media promotion. All recipients are required to accept site visits and submit quarterly reports according to a provided timeline and template.

Funding awards range from a minimum of $1,000 to a maximum of $10,000. Grants are reimbursed based on actual expenses with supporting documentation, although advance payments may be considered. Selected grantees must register as vendors with Wake County and enter into a formal agreement before receiving any funds. Grant recipients will be publicly acknowledged on the Wake County website and in related media.

While applications are currently closed, interested parties are encouraged to contact the grant program manager, Bianca Howard, at 919-856-6432 or bianca.howard@wake.gov to discuss potential projects for the upcoming fiscal year starting July 1, 2025.
