2025 MassTrails Grant Program
This program provides matching funds to communities, nonprofits, and public entities in Massachusetts for the development and maintenance of recreational trails and shared-use pathways, promoting connectivity and accessibility for all users.
Description
The 2025 MassTrails Grant Program, managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, and the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, provides matching reimbursement grants for the development, design, and maintenance of recreational trails and shared-use pathways across Massachusetts. The program supports projects that enhance regional and statewide trail networks, focusing on connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors. Applications are open to communities, public entities, nonprofit organizations, and Native nations through February 3, 2025.
Grant amounts depend on project scope, with recreational trail projects eligible for up to $100,000 and shared-use pathway projects eligible for up to $500,000, particularly those demonstrating critical regional or statewide significance. All projects require at least a 20% match of the total project cost, and funding is provided on a reimbursement basis, meaning grantees must first cover expenses and then submit documentation for reimbursement. Eligible activities include permitting, engineering, construction, maintenance, and the development of supporting amenities for trail systems.
The MassTrails Grant Program is funded by two sources: Commonwealth Trails grants from the state's Capital Investment Plan and Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grants from the Federal Highway Administration. Both motorized and non-motorized trail projects are eligible. Applications must include documented landowner permission and comply with applicable laws and regulations. Grant reviews are conducted by the Governor's Inter-Agency Trails Team and the Massachusetts Recreational Trails Advisory Board (MARTAB).
