Highway-Railroad Grade Crossing Surface Repair Program
This program provides financial assistance to cities, counties, railroads, and spur track owners for repairing and maintaining safe highway-railroad grade crossings.
Description
The Highway-Railroad Grade Crossing Surface Repair Program participates in the cost to rebuild highway-railroad grade crossings, assisting cities, counties, railroads, and spur track owners in maintaining safe and smooth crossing surfaces at highway-railroad crossings. Only public crossings are eligible for assistance. Eligible applicants include cities, counties, railroads, and spur track owners. The program is funded by an annual appropriation from Iowa's Road Use Tax Fund and allocates $900,000 annually for surface repairs, covering 60 percent of the repair costs. The remaining 40 percent of costs are shared equally by the highway authority and railroad.
