The Zeeland Board of Public Works (BPW) offers an annual Community Grant Program designed to support and enhance the local community of Zeeland, Michigan. With a longstanding commitment to community development, the BPW has established this grant to promote initiatives aligned with environmental stewardship, public safety, community enrichment, and educational advancement. Funding of up to $25,000 is made available annually, subject to Board approval, to support impactful local projects that align with BPW’s focus areas.
Eligible project themes include water and energy efficiency, conservation and education, environmental and safety education, career exploration in utility fields, arts and culture, public health and wellness, recreation, and broader community improvement initiatives. This grant operates on a reimbursement basis, meaning selected applicants will receive funding after the successful completion of their project and submission of a final report. The completed project must publicly acknowledge Zeeland BPW as a sponsor.
Applications for the 2025 grant cycle open on April 1 and close on May 2. Each submission requires a project title, organization name, contact information, and an uploaded project proposal. Applicants may also include supporting materials such as photos, designs, or letters of support. All application materials must be uploaded through the designated portal and must not exceed 50 MB per file.
Following submission, applications are reviewed by the Zeeland BPW Board of Commissioners. The board is scheduled to meet in July to evaluate proposals, although this date is subject to change. Applicants are notified of their status via email within 30 days of the board meeting. Successful applicants must complete their projects in accordance with the proposal and submit a final report for reimbursement.
Over the years, the grant program has funded a variety of initiatives, ranging from infrastructure and park development to educational and cultural programming. Examples include the Elm Street Park Development, Electric Bus Charging Stations for Zeeland Public Schools, and the Zeeland Community Rainscaping Program. These projects highlight the broad applicability and community-centered focus of the program.
