This funding opportunity supports early career researchers in genomics who are developing innovative projects, with a focus on fostering independent research careers and advancing the field through diverse and impactful studies.

Description

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has announced the funding opportunity RFA-HG-25-009, titled *“Supporting Talented Early Career Researchers in Genomics (R01 Clinical Trial Optional).” This program is designed to support exceptionally promising Early Stage Investigators (ESIs) conducting innovative research in genomics. The goal is to foster the development of independent research careers and ensure the next generation of genomics researchers can drive advances in the field.

This opportunity invites research proposals across the NHGRI mission areas, including **genomic sciences, genomic medicine, genomic data science, and ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of genomics**. NHGRI emphasizes its strategic vision, aiming to accelerate genome research, advance genomic medicine, address ELSI considerations, and develop genomics-focused resources and technologies. Applications must align with NHGRI priorities and are encouraged to consider scalability, sustainability, and broad impacts on genomics. Projects outside NHGRI’s scope, such as those limited to disease mechanisms or specific tumor genomes, are considered non-responsive and will not proceed to review.

The program emphasizes the professional and scientific development of the applicant. In addition to a robust research plan, applications must include a **Professional and Scientific Development Plan**, which requires forming an **Advisory Committee** to provide feedback on research progress and career guidance. Institutional commitment to the PD/PI’s independent career development, such as dedicated resources, protected time for research, and mentoring, is a key evaluation factor. Applications without these components will be deemed non-responsive.

**Eligible applicants** include ESIs with a **tenure-track or equivalent faculty appointment** at a U.S. institution. Applicants must have independent research space and meet NIH-defined ESI status. Individuals still in mentored positions, such as postdoctoral fellows, are not eligible. Applications from individuals belonging to underrepresented groups, working at underfunded institutions, or newly engaging with NHGRI programs are encouraged. The PD/PI must dedicate at least **25% effort (3 person-months)** annually to the proposed project. Multiple PD/PI applications are not allowed.

NHGRI anticipates committing at least **$2 million annually** to fund **3-5 awards**, contingent on funding availability and the quality of applications. The maximum budget is **$400,000 in direct costs per year** for a project period of up to **5 years**. Applicants may propose clinical trials if appropriate. Awards will be made based on scientific merit, NHGRI priorities, and available funds.

Applications are due **annually** on February 28, 2025; February 27, 2026; and February 26, 2027, with the earliest possible start dates in December of each respective year. Applicants are encouraged to submit a **Letter of Intent** at least 30 days before the due date, providing a summary of the proposed research and applicant details. Submissions must comply with NIH’s **Data Management and Sharing Policy** and NHGRI’s genomic data-sharing requirements to ensure broad, timely dissemination of results.

Applications will undergo **peer review** based on three main factors: **Importance of the Research** (significance and innovation), **Rigor and Feasibility** (approach), and **Expertise and Resources** (investigator qualifications and institutional support). The NHGRI Advisory Council will provide a second-level review, and final funding decisions will consider peer review scores, program priorities, and available funds.

The program requires applicants to submit through **Grants.gov** and track progress via **eRA Commons**. Applications must be prepared following NIH guidelines, including specific instructions for budget justifications, advisory committee formation, and institutional support letters. Applicants are encouraged to contact **Lisa H. Chadwick, Ph.D.**, the NHGRI Scientific Contact, for guidance on program alignment and application development.

This opportunity represents NHGRI’s strong commitment to supporting early career researchers who are positioned to make significant contributions to the field of genomics while advancing diversity and innovation within the research community.
