This grant provides funding for early-career clinical researchers with doctoral degrees to gain research experience under the mentorship of experienced investigators, focusing on developing skills for future independent research.

Description

The Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award (Parent K08 - Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed) provides funding for early-career clinical researchers to develop their skills in biomedical and behavioral research under the mentorship of experienced investigators. This grant is aimed at individuals with clinical doctoral degrees such as MD, DO, DDS, DMD, or equivalent, who wish to gain research experience but will not be leading an independent clinical trial. Instead, candidates may participate in clinical trials led by their mentors, focusing on acquiring skills and knowledge necessary for future independent research endeavors.

The K08 award supports 3-5 years of protected time for mentored career development and research activities, offering salary and funds for research-related expenses such as supplies, travel, tuition, and data management costs. Applicants must be committed to dedicating at least 75% of their full-time professional effort to the career development program, while the remaining time can be used for other responsibilities. Institutions must demonstrate a strong commitment to the candidate’s development, providing necessary resources, facilities, and a supportive environment.

Eligible organizations include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit entities, and various government units. While foreign institutions cannot apply directly, foreign components are allowed. Applicants should possess U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or equivalent status by the time of award.

Candidates must work closely with a primary mentor who has a track record of guiding researchers at similar career stages. Mentors should have active research support and be capable of offering the guidance needed for the applicant's proposed project. While co-mentors are encouraged, one mentor should be designated as the primary supervisor. The mentoring plan should include comprehensive strategies for training, research supervision, and progression towards independence.

Reviewers will evaluate the candidate’s research potential, the quality of the career development plan, the significance of the proposed research, and the mentoring environment. Applications will be reviewed based on scientific merit, availability of funds, and alignment with NIH priorities. Standard submission deadlines apply, with multiple cycles each year, and applications must be submitted electronically via NIH-approved platforms. Candidates are encouraged to apply early to resolve any submission issues before the deadline.
