AMS Young Scholars Program
This funding opportunity supports summer mathematics programs in the U.S. for talented high school students, promoting engaging and innovative mathematical experiences led by experienced mathematicians.
Description
The AMS Young Scholars Program, supported by the Epsilon Fund, provides funding to summer mathematics programs in the United States designed for mathematically talented high school students. These grants aim to foster curiosity and confidence in mathematics by supporting immersive summer experiences. Programs funded by this initiative offer students the opportunity to explore mathematics in innovative and engaging ways, guided by experienced mathematicians.
Grant amounts range from $2,500 to $15,000, with awards of $5,000 available as seed funding for newer programs. At least half of each grant must be allocated for student scholarships, with the remainder supporting program expenses. Institutional overhead or indirect costs are not covered. Applications are accepted annually, with the 2025 application period running from November 1, 2024, to January 22, 2025. Awards are announced in March.
Eligible programs must operate in the United States and have a proven track record of at least one year. These programs typically run for multiple weeks during the summer, enroll at least 20 mathematically talented high school students, and are directed by mathematicians. Programs can focus on various mathematical disciplines, including problem-solving and research, and are encouraged to engage undergraduate or graduate students in teaching roles. Initiatives that target underrepresented groups in mathematics, such as women and racial minorities, are particularly encouraged.
Applications must be submitted by program directors through MathPrograms.org. Each program must reapply annually, regardless of prior funding status. The AMS also welcomes donations to the Epsilon Fund to help expand support for young mathematicians.
