Description
The Federal Recreational Trails (FRT) Program, also known as the National Recreational Trails (NRT) Fund, provides funds to states to allocate grants for trails and trail-related projects. The program, administered by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and co-administered in Iowa by the Iowa DOT and Iowa DNR, supports the maintenance, development, and rehabilitation of recreational trails. Eligible projects include maintaining and restoring existing trails, developing trailhead facilities, purchasing trail construction equipment, constructing new trails, acquiring property for trails, and operating educational programs promoting trail safety and environmental protection.
