Notice of Intent to Publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement for Continuation of the NIDDK Hematology Central Coordinating Center (U24 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This funding opportunity provides $1 million to support a national coordinating center that will enhance collaboration, education, and research initiatives in nonmalignant hematology, targeting a diverse range of eligible institutions.
Description
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has announced its intent to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the continuation of the Hematology Central Coordinating Center (HCC) as part of the NIDDK Cooperative Centers of Excellence in Hematology (CCEH) Program. The initiative aims to renew support for the HCC, which plays a pivotal role in coordinating resources, research, and outreach for the nonmalignant hematology research community. The NOFO will utilize the U24 cooperative agreement activity code, and clinical trials will not be allowed.
The purpose of this program is to enable the HCC to serve as a national resource that supports up to five CCEHs. The HCC will provide central administrative support, monitor center progress, and develop a communication plan to disseminate CCEH resources, funding opportunities, and educational materials to the hematology research community. Additionally, the HCC will oversee a robust education and enrichment plan targeting junior researchers and students to foster interest and involvement in hematology research. The HCC will also administer an Opportunity Pool of funds for pilot and feasibility grants, regional enrichment programs, and initiatives designed to fill research gaps and enhance collaboration across centers.
Eligible applicants for this opportunity include public and private institutions of higher education, state and local governments, Native American tribal entities, independent school districts, nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status, small businesses, and for-profit organizations other than small businesses. This diverse eligibility ensures that a wide range of institutions can contribute to advancing hematology research.
The NOFO is expected to be published on December 2, 2024, with applications due by March 18, 2025. Awards are anticipated to be announced by December 1, 2025, with projects commencing on the same date. Potential applicants are encouraged to begin planning their proposals, forming collaborations, and aligning their objectives with the goals of the HCC and the broader CCEH program.
Evaluation criteria will likely include the applicant’s capacity to manage a national coordinating center, the innovation and feasibility of their proposed communication and education plans, and their ability to enhance diverse perspectives within the hematology research community. A Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives (PEDP) will be required as part of the application, emphasizing the program’s commitment to inclusivity and outreach. Specific application instructions and requirements will be outlined in the official NOFO.
The total estimated program funding is $1,000,000, with a maximum award ceiling of $1,000,000. No cost-sharing or matching funds are required, which allows applicants to focus on programmatic goals without additional financial burdens. Only one award is expected to be granted under this NOFO.
This opportunity provides a critical platform for advancing nonmalignant hematology research by fostering collaboration, supporting educational initiatives, and promoting innovation in the field. Interested applicants should monitor Grants.gov and NIDDK communications for updates and further details as the application deadline approaches.
