The Maine Humanities Council (MHC) Major Grant program provides funding for larger humanities programs and projects that engage nonprofit organizations and communities across Maine. Grants range from $2,001 to $7,500 and support initiatives such as exhibits, films, conferences, and other programs with significant public outreach. These grants emphasize community engagement and a deep exploration of humanities content.

Beginning in 2025, new eligibility rules apply to all MHC project grants (Major, Mini, and Arts & Humanities). Organizations awarded a grant in a given calendar year are ineligible to apply for any MHC grants during that year and the following year. For instance, a project funded in 2025 precludes the organization from applying again until January 2027.

The program prioritizes projects serving or led by communities traditionally under-resourced in the humanities. Applications are evaluated on several criteria, including the strength of humanities content, clarity of project goals, potential impact, quality of design, outreach strategies, engagement plans, and budget feasibility. Proposals must reflect MHC’s commitment to nonpartisan inquiry and balanced perspectives, particularly on sensitive topics. Projects promoting specific political, religious, or ideological viewpoints or discriminating against individuals or groups are not eligible for funding.

Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status, government entities, tribal organizations, educational institutions, and churches. Organizations without 501(c)(3) status may still apply using a fiscal sponsor. Resources on fiscal sponsorship are available through the National Council of Nonprofits.
