The 2025 Special Project Grant (SPG) offered by the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District provides funding to support municipal entities, schools, nonprofits, and local agencies in Cuyahoga County in reducing waste, promoting recycling, composting, and addressing illegal dumping. The grant supports projects that encourage sustainable practices and increase community awareness and participation in proper materials management.

Applicants can apply for grants of up to $25,000 to fund equipment, materials, and services that support these goals. There is no required local match unless the total project cost exceeds the awarded grant amount, in which case the applicant must fund the excess cost. Eligible projects include curbside and drop-off recycling programs, organics management, illegal dumping law enforcement, recycling equipment for events or venues, and educational outreach materials.

Grant applications are evaluated based on the project's educational impact, potential for measurable waste reduction, alignment with District goals, readiness to proceed, and cost justification. Strong applications will outline a clear plan with measurable outcomes, such as the weight of materials diverted or community engagement metrics. Partnerships, financial need, and plans for long-term sustainability are also considered.

Applicants must submit a complete application, including a project narrative, detailed budget, quotes or estimates, and any relevant supporting documents. Applications must be delivered to the Solid Waste District by 4:00 PM on February 3, 2025. Final decisions will be announced in March 2025. Projects must be completed by November 2025, with all related documentation and the Grant Summary and Reimbursement Report submitted by November 3, 2025.

Funds are distributed on a reimbursement basis, requiring grantees to maintain detailed records of all expenses, including purchase orders, invoices, receipts, and proof of payment. Pre-approval is required for all educational materials, and the District may conduct site visits to verify project implementation. Failure to adhere to guidelines or meet reporting deadlines may impact future grant eligibility.
