This funding opportunity provides financial support to organizations that create pathways to success for young people aged 12 to 24, particularly those from marginalized communities in King County, Washington, by focusing on education, workforce development, and mentorship.
Description
The Stopping the School to Prison Pipeline Strategy Request for Proposals (RFP) is now open for applications, with a deadline of Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 2:00 PM. This funding opportunity, offered by Best Starts for Kids, seeks to partner with communities to create meaningful pathways to success for young people aged 12 to 24 and their families. It focuses on those disproportionately impacted by systemic racism and at risk of, or already involved in, the criminal legal system. The initiative emphasizes promoting sustainable economic strengthening and fostering positive identity development through education, workforce development, cultural heritage reconnection, and mentorship opportunities.
Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, tribes and tribal organizations, schools and school districts, and public or governmental agencies. Organizations led by women of color or young people, particularly those serving the South King County region, are strongly encouraged to apply. To be eligible, applicants must provide direct services for youth aged 12 to 24, especially Black and Indigenous youth from low- to middle-income households, have a federal tax identification number, and serve communities within King County, Washington.
The program has allocated $9 million in funding for projects running from July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027. Applicants can request up to $940,000 for the 30-month funding period. Proposals will be assessed based on their alignment with program goals and their potential to create long-term positive outcomes for young people and their families.
To help applicants prepare, Best Starts for Kids will host two information sessions: on December 11, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, and on January 9, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. These sessions provide an opportunity to learn more about the funding opportunity and application process. Applicants must submit any technical assistance requests or questions by January 15, 2025.
Best Starts for Kids also offers free technical assistance to organizations developing their proposals. This support includes guidance on aligning projects with the funding priorities, application editing and review, and advice on effectively presenting organizational qualifications. Interested applicants can learn more about accessing technical assistance through the RFP website.
For questions or additional information, applicants can contact Leslie Miller, RFP Lead, at lemiller@kingcounty.gov. Detailed information about the RFP, including submission guidelines, is available through the ZoomGrants platform, where users must create a login to access materials.
This funding opportunity provides a vital chance for organizations to develop and implement programs that disrupt systemic barriers and empower young people to thrive. Applicants are encouraged to attend the information sessions, take advantage of technical assistance, and submit their applications early to ensure a strong proposal.
