This funding opportunity provides financial support to federally recognized Native American Tribes to improve library and archival services, enhance community programming, and preserve cultural resources.

Description

The Native American Library Services: Basic Grants program, managed by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), provides funding to federally recognized Native American Tribes to support library and archival services. This program aims to improve access to information, enhance learning opportunities, and preserve cultural resources within Tribal communities. The grant amount ranges from $6,000 to $10,000, and the grant period is one year. There is no cost-sharing requirement for this program. Applications for the FY 2025 funding cycle are due by February 4, 2025.

The primary goal of the program is to enhance library and archival services for Tribal communities. This includes supporting the acquisition of library-related materials, developing programming to address community priorities, providing training for library staff, and implementing projects that incorporate multiple objectives. The program seeks to help Tribal libraries serve as community knowledge hubs and resource centers, adapting to changing information needs while preserving cultural and historical resources.

Eligibility is limited to federally recognized Tribes that offer library and/or archival services. These services may include access to books, electronic media, research databases, employment resources, and community programming. Collaborations with other entities, such as Tribal colleges, school libraries, or local nonprofits, are encouraged. However, the Tribe must be the lead applicant and responsible for administering the award.

Applications should align with the program’s objectives and demonstrate how the proposed activities will benefit the Tribal community. Activities may include library material acquisitions, training initiatives, programming for cultural preservation, or events addressing specific community needs. Partnerships and collaborations are welcome but must adhere to the eligibility requirements outlined by the program.

To assist applicants, IMLS offers a pre-application webinar and encourages interested Tribes to contact program officers for guidance. Key contacts include Jennifer Himmelreich, Senior Program Officer, and Sheena Afoakwa, Program Specialist. Both are available for consultations and can provide tailored advice to applicants.

Applications must be submitted by February 4, 2025. Potential applicants should review the full Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for detailed guidelines and prepare their proposals accordingly. The program's success relies on the availability of funds and IMLS discretion. For additional resources, applicants can access the IMLS Award Database or contact the IMLS office directly. This opportunity offers a meaningful way for Tribes to enhance library services and contribute to community well-being and cultural preservation.
