Marine Geology and Geophysics
This grant provides funding for researchers studying the geology and geophysics of ocean basins, including topics like underwater volcanoes, sediment transport, and marine hazards, to advance our understanding of Earth's processes.
Description
The Marine Geology and Geophysics (MG&G) program supports research focusing on the geology and geophysics of present-day ocean basins and margins, as well as the Great Lakes. It encompasses studies that enhance understanding of marine geological and geophysical processes through field investigations, data analysis, laboratory experiments, methods development, and modeling.
The MG&G program seeks to advance scientific knowledge in key areas including the structure, composition, tectonics, and evolution of the oceanic lithosphere; paleoceanography and paleoclimate; submarine volcanology and geochemistry; marine hydrogeology and water-rock interactions; and hydrothermal venting processes. Additional areas of interest include sedimentology, stratigraphy, and sediment transport processes, as well as marine geohazards such as earthquakes, faulting, and tsunamis. Coastal processes, including the geological aspects of hurricanes, erosion, and sea-level change, are also within the program’s scope.
This program supports both the collection of new field data and the synthesis of existing data. It encourages research projects that are relevant to advancing marine geoscience and emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches. Investigators are encouraged to contact program staff when their research spans multiple programs to seek guidance on submission and review procedures.
Eligible activities include research conducted by academic institutions, research organizations, and other qualified entities that meet NSF eligibility guidelines. Proposals may address fundamental scientific questions or focus on innovative approaches to understanding marine processes. Projects involving collaborations across scientific disciplines and the development of cutting-edge tools or methodologies are welcomed.
The MG&G program accepts proposals at any time, as it does not operate under deadlines or target dates. Submissions undergo a two-stage review process consisting of ad hoc mail reviews and panel evaluations. Panels are convened on an as-needed basis to ensure timely evaluation of proposals. Proposals for specific program solicitations, such as P4Climate, CAREER, or MCA, must adhere to their respective deadlines.
Applicants can submit proposals through Research.gov or Grants.gov, following the applicable preparation and submission guidelines. NSF's Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide provides detailed instructions for submission. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that proposals meet NSF requirements prior to submission.
