Lighting Prize (L-Prize)
This initiative provides up to $10 million in prizes to innovators developing advanced LED lighting solutions that improve energy efficiency, quality, and accessibility for commercial use.
Description
The L-Prize, organized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), aims to advance the state-of-the-art in LED lighting by encouraging the development of next-generation solid-state lighting (SSL) systems. This initiative targets significant improvements in energy efficiency, lighting quality, and sustainability for commercial sector lighting, which accounts for about 56% of national lighting energy use. The L-Prize will reward innovations that not only enhance lighting performance but also drive equity, accessibility, and resilience in lighting system design and deployment. The competition is divided into three phases: Concept Phase, Prototype Phase, and Manufacturing and Installation Phase, with a total prize pool of up to $12.2 million. The current phase focuses on the production and installation of commercially available products that meet the L-Prize’s stringent technical requirements. This phase will run from April 3, 2024, to August 5, 2025, with up to four winners sharing a $10 million prize pool.
