Public Media Fund 2025
This funding opportunity provides financial support for film and television projects that showcase the voices and cultures of Native Americans and Alaska Natives for public media broadcasting.
Description
The Vision Maker Media (VMM) Public Media Fund provides financial support to film and television projects that are intended for public media television broadcasting, including platforms supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), such as digital and streaming services. The fund focuses on amplifying the voices, cultures, experiences, and perspectives of Native Americans and Alaska Natives. Projects must be appropriate for public broadcasting and adhere to the PBS Technical Operating Specifications and Production Guidelines outlined in the PBS Red Book.
Applications for the Public Media Fund are accepted during two cycles each year: January 1 through June 30 and July 1 through December 31. The application must include a mandatory budget template and comply with all eligibility and technical requirements listed in the guidelines.
VMM offers grants across three distinct funding categories: Research and Development (ranging from $5,000 to $25,000), Production (up to $150,000), and Post-Production (up to $30,000). Funded projects enter into a Production License Agreement with Vision Maker Media, which includes assignment of exclusive broadcast rights for a four-year term and a one-year off-air recording right for educators.
Completed films may also receive additional distribution opportunities through VMM’s extensive partnerships, including educational, theatrical, non-theatrical, free and pay television, video-on-demand, multimedia, and internet broadcasting formats such as streaming and podcasting. Past VMM-supported films have appeared on prominent public television programs such as Independent Lens, POV, America ReFramed, and American Masters, earning national recognition and awards.
Applicants must ensure their project aligns with the mission of Vision Maker Media, which seeks to support authentic Native storytelling and increase representation in public media. All inquiries should be directed to info@visionmakermedia.org or by calling 402-472-3522.
