Asian American Arts Alliance

This fellowship provides financial support and professional development opportunities for an emerging Asian American dance artist in New York City to enhance their artistic career and community engagement.

Description

The Asian American Arts Alliance (A4), with support from the New York Community Trust, is offering the 2025 Jadin Wong Fellowship in Dance to support an early-career Asian American dance artist based in New York City. The fellowship is named in honor of Jadin Wong, a pioneering Chinese American actress, dancer, and talent agent who dedicated her career to advancing opportunities for Asian American performers. This fellowship aligns with A4’s mission to ensure greater representation, equity, and support for Asian American artists through resource sharing, promotion, and community-building.

The fellowship is open to one emerging Asian American dancer or choreographer, aged 30 or younger at the start of the fellowship, whose work demonstrates outstanding promise and could benefit from further artistic and professional development. The selected fellow will receive an unrestricted cash stipend of $7,500 and participate in an eight-month fellowship program from May to December 2025. This program includes career coaching, artistic mentorship, and professional development support tailored to the fellow’s needs.

The fellowship is structured in three phases. In Phase 1 (May–July 2025), the fellow will receive at least three career coaching sessions focusing on strengthening artistic vision and career planning. In Phase 2 (July–September 2025), the fellow will be paired with an established or mid-career dance professional for mentorship, with one-on-one meetings tailored to their artistic and career goals. In Phase 3 (October–December 2025), the fellow will develop and present a community workshop or public presentation, with up to $1,000 in production funding and venue partner support provided by A4.

Applicants must be of Asian heritage, reside in New York City, and remain in the city for the duration of the fellowship. They must have at least two years of experience in presented dance but must not be enrolled in a degree-granting program in dance during the fellowship period. Exceptions may be made for post-graduate students in unrelated fields. Selection is based on artistic merit, potential for growth, contribution to the Asian American community, and the development of new or existing work.

Applications must be submitted online via Jotform by March 24, 2025, at 11:59 PM ET. Required materials include an artistic statement, professional growth narrative, community impact statement, a letter of recommendation, a resume, a headshot, and three recent video work samples (up to 15 minutes in total). Proof of residency in NYC and proof of age are also required.

A4 will host a virtual information session on February 26, 2025, from 12:00–1:00 PM ET to provide application guidance. The review process will be conducted by a jury of dance professionals, with notifications sent to the selected fellow on April 25, 2025. The fellow will be publicly announced on May 7, 2025.
