Description
The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) is accepting nominations for the 2024 South Dakota Specialty Crop Producer of the Year Award. This award recognizes a farmer who has made a significant contribution to specialty crop production in South Dakota, including crops such as fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, honey, and nursery crops like floriculture. Nominations are open to producers, customers, and community members from November 25 to December 16, 2024.
Nominees should demonstrate visionary leadership in the agricultural industry, advocate for specialty crops, and actively promote growth and innovation within South Dakota’s local food systems. The ideal candidate also mentors beginner farmers and supports the next generation of producers. Nominations, which may be self-submitted or submitted on behalf of others, must include a 500-word description of the nominee's contributions and at least one photo.
A panel of judges from SDSPA will select top nominees, with public voting to take place starting December 30, 2024. The winner will be announced at the Upper Midwest Urban and Rural Agriculture Innovation (UMURAI) Conference on February 6, 2025, in Oacoma, South Dakota.
The award winner will receive a complimentary pass to the UMURAI Conference, a one-year free membership to the SDSPA, and recognition through a statewide press release, the SDSPA website, social media platforms, and newsletter. This honor highlights the vital role specialty crop producers play in enhancing local food systems, community engagement, and economic growth across South Dakota.
