Workspace Residency Program
This grant provides resources and support for artists, researchers, and creators across the U.S. to develop new projects or ongoing work in media arts, including film, video, and performance, while fostering community engagement and professional growth.
Description
The Workspace Residency Program, offered by Squeaky Wheel, is designed for individuals from Buffalo and across the United States who are engaged in ongoing projects or the creation of new work. This program provides residents with access to resources, time, and support necessary for their artistic endeavors. The residency is open to a diverse range of practitioners, including those working in non-fiction and documentary films, video games, media art installations, performances, and sound work, among others. The program encourages applicants to articulate how their projects relate to media arts.
The primary purpose of the Workspace Residency is to support the careers of artists and researchers by providing them with tailored access to facilities, equipment, and technical consultation. Residents are expected to engage with the community by presenting their work in public events and conducting workshops. The program aims to foster ongoing relationships with residents even after the residency concludes, as evidenced by invitations for former residents to participate in exhibitions and performances.
Funding for the residency includes a stipend of up to $900, artist fees of up to $300, accommodations for out-of-town residents, and travel support of up to $400. Additionally, there is optional financial assistance available for childcare and disability support, which can also reach up to $900. The residency lasts for two weeks in the spring and three weeks in the summer, during which residents are expected to work approximately 30 hours per week on their projects. Out-of-town residents will receive travel reimbursements and accommodations at a nearby AirBnB.
Eligibility for the Workspace Residency requires applicants to possess a U.S. Social Security Number, as all payments are made via check. Full-time students are generally ineligible, although exceptions are made for graduate students nearing the end of their thesis. Applicants may submit only one application, and local residents who have previously participated in a residency or solo exhibition at Squeaky Wheel must wait two years before reapplying. Non-local applicants must wait five years, and Squeaky Wheel staff and board members are not eligible to apply, although contract employees may submit applications.
The application process includes specific submission requirements and questions that applicants must address. Evaluation criteria will focus on the relevance and quality of the proposed project, the applicant's background, and their engagement with media arts. The program is anticipated to open for applications with a deadline set for November 25, 2024.
Important dates and timelines for the residency will be outlined in the application materials, and interested individuals are encouraged to check the Squeaky Wheel website for updates and further information. The program is designed to be inclusive and supportive, aiming to cultivate a vibrant community of artists and researchers dedicated to exploring the possibilities of media arts.
