Truckee River Fund

Private
Community Foundation of Northern Nevada

This funding opportunity supports nonprofit organizations and government entities in projects that protect and improve the water quality and resources of the Truckee River and its watershed.

Description

The Truckee River Fund, managed by the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada, is accepting proposals for projects aimed at protecting and enhancing the water quality and resources of the Truckee River and its watershed. Grants are awarded based on recommendations from the Truckee River Fund Advisory Committee and require approval from the Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) Board and the Foundation's Board of Trustees. Up to $550,000 in funding is available for the fiscal year, though the committee may choose to award less.

Proposals must align with the mission of the Truckee River Fund and demonstrate measurable impacts. Key priorities include preventing and controlling aquatic invasive species, improving watershed conditions, mitigating stormwater runoff, supporting reforestation and revegetation efforts, rehabilitating tributaries, and promoting stewardship and environmental awareness. Projects addressing impaired waters or those near TMWA’s water intake locations receive preference. Applications must include a project budget and demonstrate a minimum 25% match, which can consist of funding or in-kind services.

Eligible applicants include registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, nonprofit educational institutions, and governmental entities. Projects must begin within 180 days of grant award, and funds are reimbursed based on actual expenditures. Applicants must adhere to various stipulations, including exclusive use of funds for the project's charitable purposes, submission of reports, and avoiding ex parte communications with the advisory committee.

Applications are evaluated based on their relevance to Truckee River Fund priorities, public and customer benefits, quality of project design, readiness to begin, effectiveness of the applicant organization, and adequacy of the proposed budget. Proposals that demonstrate collaboration, sustainability, and measurable outcomes are prioritized. Projects must also comply with a 25% limit on indirect or overhead costs.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, January 31, 2025, by noon, with confirmations of receipt required. Projects must adhere to additional specific criteria for certain priorities, such as weed control, where applicants are advised to consult Lauren Renda for guidance. Those proposing projects downstream of the USGS Vista gage must meet the 25% match requirement through cash contributions.

Applicants are encouraged to review existing assessments of the Truckee River and Donner Lake watersheds, which may influence funding decisions. Full application details and resources, including budget templates and assessment reports, are available at www.truckeeriverfund.org.
