This program provides funding to local governments and nonprofit snowmobile clubs for maintaining and improving snowmobile trails across Michigan's designated statewide trail system.

Description

The Snowmobile Trail Improvement Fund is designed to maintain snowmobile trails as part of Michigan's designated statewide trail system. The program allocates grants for three main purposes: seasonal grooming and general maintenance (including trail surface grooming, signage placement, and brush clearing); special maintenance projects (such as bridge construction and repairs, erosion control, culvert replacement, and trail relocation); and replacement of trail maintenance equipment (grooming tractors, drags, front blades, and communication equipment). Special maintenance and equipment replacement grants are exclusive to current trail sponsors. Eligibility extends to local government units and nonprofit, incorporated snowmobile clubs and organizations, with a requirement for trails to be on public property or have a public right-of-way if on private land, in areas receiving adequate seasonal snowfall.
