Poetry Society of America

This grant honors poets for exceptional sequences of poems published in 2024, providing significant financial support to celebrate the art of multi-part poetry.

Description

The Four Quartets Prize, offered by the Poetry Society of America, honors a unified and complete sequence of poems published in the United States in 2024. This prize celebrates the art of the multi-part poem, including book-length verse narratives, novels in verse, and entire volumes that form a unified poetic sequence. Examples of eligible works include Gwendolyn Brooks's The Anniad and John Berryman's 77 Dream Poems.

The winner will receive a $20,000 prize, while finalists will each receive $1,000. The award will be announced in early summer 2025. Eligible submissions must include a minimum of fourteen pages of poems that are unified by subject, form, and style. The sequence may have been published in various print or online journals, chapbooks, or books throughout 2024, but all poems in the sequence must be brought together to form a complete work. Self-published works and submissions by more than one author are not eligible.

Submissions must be accompanied by an entry form and a paragraph detailing the aims of the work. If the sequence has been published in multiple journals or chapbooks, authors must provide four copies of the table of contents and copyright page from each publication, as well as the corresponding poems. If the sequence constitutes an entire book, four copies of the book should be submitted. All entries must be sent via USPS to the Poetry Society of America at the specified address by the postmark deadline of December 31, 2024. There is no submission fee.

Authors, publishers, and literary agents are all eligible to submit entries. However, submissions from Poetry Society employees, advisory board members, officers, or their immediate families are not eligible. Authors are limited to one submission each. A self-addressed, stamped postcard should be included for acknowledgment of receipt. The Society will not confirm receipt via phone or email, nor will it accept revisions or corrections once a submission is received.

The prize highlights the enduring importance of multi-part poetry and provides a significant platform for celebrating and supporting accomplished poets. Writers with eligible works are encouraged to apply to this prestigious opportunity.
