U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (National Institutes of Health)

This funding opportunity supports postdoctoral researchers in the NHLBI's intramural program as they transition to independent research positions at external institutions, providing mentorship and financial resources during the process.

Description

The NHLBI Career Transition Award (K22) supports postdoctoral fellows and doctoral-level researchers within the NHLBI's intramural program, providing a pathway to transition into independent research roles at extramural institutions. The award consists of two phases: a mentored intramural phase of up to two years, followed by a three-year extramural phase. The goal is to help candidates establish their independent research programs by offering both mentorship and funding during the transition.

This award is intended for researchers who do not lead clinical trials but may gain experience through a mentor-led trial. Candidates are evaluated for their potential to become independent investigators and are expected to transition to an extramural institution, which must provide a startup package, protected research time, and salary. The application requires a detailed research and career development plan covering both phases, with separate budgets for each.

Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens or permanent residents currently in training in the NHLBI Division of Intramural Research. The intramural phase must be completed within five years of joining the NHLBI. Candidates must secure a tenure-track or equivalent position at an extramural institution to transition to the independent phase. Applications will be reviewed for scientific merit, the quality of the mentorship plan, and the candidate's potential for a successful independent research career.
