Biological Nutrient Removal Program
This program provides funding to publicly owned wastewater treatment plants to upgrade their systems for better nitrogen removal, improving water quality in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
Description
The Biological Nutrient Removal Program (BNR) is designed to provide funding for publicly owned wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to retrofit or upgrade their facilities with biological nitrification/denitrification capabilities. The goal of the program is to achieve an annual average effluent concentration of 8 mg/l total nitrogen, thereby improving water quality and supporting environmental sustainability. The program is particularly focused on enhancing nutrient removal processes in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Eligible applicants include local governments and publicly owned WWTPs that are looking to implement these upgrades. The funding applications are accepted annually from December through January, allowing for a structured timeline for interested parties to apply for financial assistance.
