Description
The Research Experiences and/or Mentoring Networks through Research Education to Enhance Clinician-Scientists' Participation in NIDCD’s Research (R25 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) grant is a reissue of PAR-21-187, managed by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This funding opportunity aims to support research education programs that enhance the recruitment and retention of clinician-scientists in research areas related to the NIDCD’s mission, including hearing, balance, taste, smell, voice, speech, and language. Updated on March 31, 2025, to align with evolving agency priorities, the grant calls for applicants to carefully review the new requirements.
The purpose of this R25 funding opportunity is to provide educational activities focused on two key areas: research experiences and mentoring activities. These programs are designed to offer hands-on research opportunities and complementary professional development for individuals at different stages of their research careers, including master’s and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-to-mid-career faculty. The initiative places a strong emphasis on individualized development plans, mentoring support, and activities that facilitate transitions between career stages.
Funding can be used for participant costs, personnel involved in program implementation, limited administrative support, and related expenses such as consultant fees, travel, and supplies. The program allows for up to $250,000 in direct costs per year for a maximum of five years. Clinical trials are not permitted under this NOFO. Importantly, research education programs should be distinct from existing NIH-funded training mechanisms and may complement ongoing institutional initiatives.
Eligible applicants include a wide range of institutions such as public and private higher education institutions, non-profits, small businesses, state and local governments, and tribal organizations. Foreign entities are not eligible, though foreign components within U.S. organizations may be involved. The initiative particularly welcomes partnerships between research-intensive and less research-intensive institutions, as well as those serving underrepresented or underserved populations.
The application process requires strict adherence to the NIH “How to Apply” guide, with mandatory components such as an institutional commitment letter, evaluation and dissemination plans, and detailed descriptions of participant selection, mentoring plans, and educational strategies. The proposal must include a thorough evaluation plan and outline how results will be disseminated nationally.
Applications are due semiannually on January 29 and September 29 through 2027. Reviews will be conducted in cycles with notifications provided through eRA Commons. Applicants are encouraged to begin the submission process early due to the complex registration and preparation requirements. Contact points for scientific, review, and financial queries are also provided.
