2024 AFID Infrastructure Grants
This grant provides funding to Virginia's local governments for infrastructure projects that enhance local food production and sustainable agriculture, prioritizing initiatives like processing facilities and farmers markets, especially in economically distressed areas.
Description
The Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development (AFID) Infrastructure Grant Program provides grants of up to $50,000 to political subdivisions in Virginia, such as counties, cities, towns, and planning district commissions, for infrastructure projects that support local food production and sustainable agriculture. The grants are competitive, awarded semi-annually, and paid as reimbursements, requiring matching funds from the applicants. Projects must be related to infrastructure development that benefits local food production and agriculture, with priority given to processing facilities, farmers markets, food hubs, and projects in economically distressed communities.
Eligible applicants must be local government entities or associated organizations, and they may apply on behalf of multiple jurisdictions with one acting as the lead applicant. Generally, a 1:1 matching requirement applies, though a reduced 2:1 match is available for economically distressed areas or projects benefiting multiple small-scale producers. Up to 50% of the match may come from in-kind contributions or other sources like federal grants or non-profit funds.
Grant funds are to be used primarily for capital expenditures such as building renovations, equipment purchases, and code compliance. The grant does not cover marketing, land purchases, or general administrative expenses. Recipients have two years to complete their projects, with the possibility of a one-year extension, and must submit interim and final reports to receive reimbursements.
