AAPI Futures Impact Producer Fellowship
This fellowship provides funding and support for Impact Producers of documentary films that focus on AAPI issues, aiming to promote political organizing and narrative change within Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.
Description
The Asian American Documentary Network (A-Doc) and Asian American Futures (AAF) are collaborating on the AAPI Futures Impact Producer Fellowship, which invites proposals from Impact Producers working on documentary films that are currently in post-production or have recently been completed. The Fellowship aims to support Impact Producers who are focusing on political organizing and narrative change within Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. It also seeks to foster long-term social and political change in these communities through the impactful use of documentary filmmaking.
The primary theme for this Fellowship is AAPI legacy, which encompasses historical contributions, political impact, and challenges faced by these communities. The Fellowship is aimed at films that explore topics relevant to AAPI issues such as combating anti-Asian hate, supporting immigrant rights, and envisioning alternatives to systems that adversely impact these communities. The Fellowship will offer grants and support to selected films that fit this thematic focus.
Four fellows will be awarded $17,000 to further their impact campaigns for their documentary films. The Fellowship runs from April to December 2025, and participants will be expected to complete their impact campaigns by the end of this period. The program will provide support in the form of mentorship, community partnerships, and training, helping Fellows to enhance their skills in impact producing within the documentary and social justice spheres. The program will include an in-person cohort retreat in May 2025, offering Fellows a dedicated space for intensive collaboration and development.
Ideal candidates for this Fellowship are Impact Producers with experience in developing collaborative projects involving the AAPI community, or individuals who are committed to becoming Impact Producers. Applicants must demonstrate alignment with the values of A-Doc, including a deep interest in supporting the AAPI community through storytelling and art. Projects submitted for the Fellowship must focus on the AAPI experience, address social issues relevant to these communities, and propose a well-defined impact campaign.
The fellowship will be evaluated based on the intended impact of the film, the social issue it addresses, the skills demonstrated in impact producing, the feasibility of the project within the proposed budget and timeline, and the connection to the community. Applications must be submitted by February 28, 2025, and applicants should be prepared to participate in the fellowship activities, including the cohort retreat.
