Award Details: The Sunderland Foundation awards grants to registered 501(c)(3) organizations for capital building projects. In recent grant cycles, the foundation has awarded grants in four main areas: Higher Education, Human Services, Arts and Culture, and Health Care and Hospitals. The foundation awarded $49 million to educational organizations, $30 million to human service nonprofits, $23 million to arts and culture projects, and $65 million to hospitals and health-care groups in 2022.
Eligibility: The Sunderland Foundation currently only accepts grant applications from organizations located in Eastern Kansas, Western Missouri, Metro Areas of Omaha & Lincoln in Nebraska, and the Puget Sound Area in Washington. Primary and secondary schools are generally not considered for grants. The foundation does not award grants for annual operating expenses, programs or endowments, sponsorship of special events, or scholarships provided directly to individuals.
Application Process: All grant requests must be submitted through the Online Application Portal. Paper submissions are no longer accepted without an accompanying online grant application. The application requires information about the organization's details, mission, purpose, commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; board of directors and governance; project details including need and expected outcomes; detailed project budget; schedule of project funding sources; financial operating plan; audited financial statements; IRS Form 990; IRS 501(c)(3) Letter of Determination; IRS Form W-9; and any additional plans or information related to the project.
