2025 Strengthening Civics Education in Appalachian Ohio
This funding opportunity supports K-12 public schools and organizations in Appalachian Ohio to enhance civics education and promote civic engagement among students, particularly those from low-income and nonwhite backgrounds.
The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) is a regional philanthropic organization dedicated to fostering prosperity and well-being across the 32 counties of Appalachian Ohio. FAO partners with 14 geographic affiliate foundations and the African American Community Fund to mobilize resources that support educational, economic, and community development initiatives. Through these partnerships, FAO works to create stronger communities by enhancing access to education, workforce development, civic engagement, and social opportunities that contribute to healthier, more prosperous lives for Appalachian residents.
With continued support from the Longaberger Family Foundation, FAO has launched the 2025 Strengthening Civics Education in Appalachian Ohio grant opportunity. This funding program is designed to enhance civics education among K-12 students in public schools across the region. The initiative addresses a recognized gap in civic knowledge and engagement, particularly among low-income and nonwhite students, and aims to foster civic participation and understanding. Research commissioned by the Appalachian Funders Network highlights that increased civic engagement correlates with both economic and health benefits, reinforcing the importance of civics education in achieving broader community well-being.
The grant will fund projects and programs that help Appalachian Ohio youth develop the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to become informed, engaged citizens. Previous grants have supported diverse projects, such as student-led podcasts featuring civic leaders, participation in Model United Nations and Youth in Government programs, National History Day events, mock trial competitions, internships in local government offices, service-learning projects, and the development of civics-related lesson plans and materials. This wide range of supported projects reflects the program’s flexibility in meeting the needs and creativity of local educators, students, and community groups.
Eligible applicants include public schools, educators, students, and nonprofit or public organizations that serve K-12 students within Appalachian Ohio’s 32 counties. Young people are encouraged to actively participate in or lead the application process in collaboration with eligible organizations and trusted adults. The grant requests should range between $500 and $5,000, although awards of up to $10,000 may be considered if the project demonstrates exceptional potential impact. At least $30,000 is available for this grant cycle.
Applications must be submitted electronically via FAO’s grant portal by Friday, March 14, 2025. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered. For any questions or clarifications, applicants can contact Kelly Morman at kmorman@ffao.org. This grant opportunity is part of FAO’s broader Education Pillar of Prosperity, which seeks to create pathways to lifelong learning and civic involvement in Appalachian Ohio communities.
Through this funding, FAO and the Longaberger Family Foundation aim to equip students with the knowledge and tools necessary to understand the civic infrastructure of their communities, recognize how local, state, and national issues impact them, and take informed actions to improve the well-being of Appalachian Ohio. This work ultimately supports FAO’s vision of a flourishing Appalachian Ohio, where strong communities provide abundant opportunities for all residents.
